Description from the seller

DECORATIVE BAGA DRUM

The Baga live along the Atlantic coast of the Republic of Guinea, in West Africa. They form one of the smallest ethnic groups in Guinea, and have lived relatively isolated from their neighbors because of the vast swamps that surround them. They have nonetheless left a rich artistic heritage, which includes crests, figurative sculptures, masks, and everyday objects such as musical instruments. This drum, called timba, and matimbo in neighboring groups, was played during the initiation ceremonies of members of the A-Tekan association, on occasions of the funerals of its members or during the marriage of their daughters. It is distinguished from other drums used in the A-Tekan by its size, which requires the player to remain standing to play the instrument. It was also used during the initiation into the secrets of pharmacopoeia. The drum shell is stretched with a skin, and its sides are enhanced with zones of contrasting colors. It is supported by female figures and a high-relief sculpture depicting a horse.
