Neo‑Renaissance oak cabinet, circa 1900, in Art Nouveau style, highlighting solid oak construction and architectural Neo-Renaissance detailing.

AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Magnificent console cabinet (sideboard) in Neo-Renaissance style, dating from the second half of the 19th century (Napoleon III / Historicism period). This piece is distinguished by its strictly architectural silhouette, its high-quality solid oak timber, and an original dark, deep patina. It opens with a large belt drawer and a panel door, framed by remarkable columns.

Dimensions
Height: Approximately 92 cm
Width: Approximately 80 cm
Depth: Approximately 50 cm

Detailed Description and Ornamental Program

1. Upper Part and Belt
The piece is topped with a solid rectangular top whose edge is delicately moulded, supported by wide friezed crosspieces. The belt features a large storage drawer, adorned at its center by a hanging pull handle in wrought iron, chiselled with a complex motif of volutes and acanthus leaves.

2. The Door and its Central Medallion
The most distinctive element of this cabinet is its paneled door. The central panel is sculpted with a rigorous geometric diamond-point composition (or faceted geometric motif), at the center of which is affixed a large oval relief medallion. This medallion is adorned with a superb motif of an open, stylized acanthus flower. The rest of the panel is soberly decorated with incised motifs of ferns and light foliage in the corners.

The key entry is an exceptional piece of ironwork: a vertical long forged and chiselled iron entry, with openwork scrolls, located to the right of the door.

3. Structural Architecture and Columns
This is where the piece excels: the facade is flanked by two double engaged columns (or twin pilasters). These columns are fluted along their entire length and rest on twisted bases with capitals sculpted of complex, nerve-filled acanthus leaves. This double structure gives the piece a monumental presence despite its compact size. The whole rests on a massive moulded plinth.

Quality of Manufacture

Authenticity: XIXth-century piece, in traditional solid oak construction.
Interior: The interior is clean, compartmentalized by a sturdy shelf.

Back and Rear: The back is original, a solid oak panel with robust crosspieces visible (typical of traditional joinery).

Key: The piece is sold with its original forged iron key, perfectly functional, adorned with an elegant two-tone tassel trim (azure blue and cream).

State of Preservation

This piece is in a beautiful general condition for a house, sound and stable.

Structure: Perfectly solid.
Wood: The wood shows a beautiful patina. There are light signs of normal wear due to time and a few surface scratches (notably on the upper top and the lower plinth), but they do not affect the integrity of the furniture and enhance its authenticity.
Mechanisms: The drawer slides well, the lock and key work perfectly.

Decorative Integration

With its compact dimensions, this small cabinet is ideal for an entry hall, living room, or office. Its sculptural and architectural style immediately adds character to an interior, blending equally well with classical or contemporary decor thanks to the rigor of its lines.
