Description from the seller
Beautifully carved ethnographic spoon from West Africa, probably Ghana or Ivory Coast, made of polished animal bone. The spoon has an anthropomorphic end with a stylized face and a geometrically worked handle.
The object shows influences from Akan/Baule traditions and was probably made in the first half of the 20th century for ceremonial or decorative use. Nice warm patina, expressive design, clear manual cutting marks and a tribal appearance. Purchased at the Paul Brandt auction in Amsterdam 1977/78
Material analysis based on visual characteristics points to bone rather than ivory.
