Description from the seller
wall sconces candle holder with two lights (or two arms of light) in a classic style, made in gilt bronze. They feature a richly worked decorative scheme, characteristic of French decorative arts, oscillating between the Louis XVI style (for its strict symmetry and engraved motifs) and the Empire/Neoclassical style (for its references to Antiquity).
Analysis of Stylistic Details
The sconce is composed of several elements stacked vertically along its central axis (the shaft):
The summit (Crowning): The whole is topped with a pinecone-shaped finial, placed on a small urn or draped vase with geometric motifs.
The upper ring: Just below, a circular band is adorned with a frieze of circular, concentric motifs (oculi or bead frieze).
The central shaft: * The upper part of the shaft is fluted and flares outward to support the arms.
In the center, a relief motif depicts a head of a faun, satyr, or bearded lion, framed on either side by suspended elements reminiscent of draperies or passementerie.
The lower part is a quiver or a tapered pilaster, decorated with vertical fluting and vegetal motifs (probably asparagus or stylized water leaves).
The base (Cul-de-lampe): The shaft ends in a ring with twisted laurel leaf motifs (torse) and culminates in a knop-shaped cap or an elongated bud.
