Cigarette case - .875 (84 Zolotniki) silver - Russian silver box

Magnificent old box for cigars or cigarettes made in solid silver of great thickness, decorated with an impressive high-relief scene of historical and emotional character, executed with extraordinary sculptural quality.

The lid features a deeply expressive composition that recalls the great dramatic scenes of 19th-century Russian historical painting, associated with suffering, tragedy and human pain. The scene shows an old man embracing a wounded or dying young man, with an exceptional artistic execution in the faces, hands, and the folds of the garments. The relief work has great depth and volume, approaching more a small silver sculpture than a simple utilitarian box.

The entire scene has been handcrafted in solid silver and subsequently refined and hand-polished, which gives a very elegant visual presence and high artistic quality. The interior retains traces of original gilding, typical of high-category pieces intended for fine tobacco or cigars.

The box retains Russian 84 zolotniki silver hallmarks and a master’s mark apparently “ИИА”, corresponding to Russian production from the late 19th or early 20th century.

Its high weight demonstrates the large amount of silver used and the excellent quality of manufacture.
