Victorian EPNS Elkington & Co Decanter c. 1890–1910, Bacchus and Rampant Lion Decor, Thick Glass, English Yoke Claret
An elegant late Victorian-inspired wine decanter, crafted from thick blown glass and richly ornate EPNS (Electro Plated Nickel Silver) metal mount. The piece impresses with its elaborate Bacchic motif decoration – vines, vine leaves, bunches of grapes and a mascaron representing Bacchus/Dionysus, the god of wine.
The lid is surmounted by a spectacular rampant lion, a decorative element typical of quality British silverware of the late 19th century. The heavy glass body is complemented by an elegant and basic handle with engraved radial decoration.
The markings present include EPNS and the plate grade “A”, indicating a high-quality electroplated piece, made in the tradition of the great British workshops in Sheffield. The style, construction and ornamentation are characteristic of the late Victorian – early Edwardian period (c. 1890–1910), an era in which prestigious firms such as Elkington & Co. and other Sheffield manufacturers popularized this type of luxury objects intended for serving wine.
Dimensions: approx. 28 × 14 cm.
Condition: very good for its age, with minor wear consistent with age. Decorative and collectible piece, ideal for classic interiors, collectors of British silverware or Victorian objects.
A carafe with remarkable presence, representative of the refinement and craftsmanship of British manufacturing from the turn of the 19th–20th centuries.
