Born in Paris in 1972, Guillaume Lemarquier, alias Mist, is an artist from the street art scene, more precisely from graffiti.
Mist began practicing graffiti in Paris in 1988, then around the four corners of the globe, from which he draws his graphic codes. He quickly became one of the best graffiti lettering tracers in Europe – often accompanied by the characters of his accomplice at the time, Steph Cop – he marked an entire generation from which would emerge what became street art culture.
His style and his collaboration with artists Tilt, Steph Cop, T.Kid, Bando… on numerous works then made him an internationally recognized artist on the graffiti scene.
Later in 1991, during the Graffiti Art exhibition at the Musée national des Monuments français, he exhibited wood-cut paintings alongside internationally renowned American artists such as Futura, Rammellesee, Keith Haring or Jean-Michel Basquiat.
Always more avant-garde, Mist was then one of the few artists from this movement to work in three dimensions. He is one of the pioneers of the designer toys phenomenon, those small vinyl sculptures produced in editions from 100 to 1000 pieces and sold in collectible toy stores. From then on Mist devoted himself fully to his creation in his Montpellier workshop, where he lives today.
At a time when the word street art no longer really makes sense – one becomes a street artist after leaving the fine arts or simply by using an aerosol can or techniques such as stenciling – at a time when only the result matters – one forgets the path, the asset or the legitimacy – Mist’s current painting is, for those who know his history, coherent and totally true to his journey.
He works on calligraphy, on the gestural energy of graffiti but also on the intensity of colors with the sole aim of burning out the retinas.
His experience oozes from his painting. It is only the obvious evolution of his first graffiti along railways in 1988 when he was a graphic design student. If the evolution was slow, it is now irrefutable, inescapable.
The construction lines of the letters and the outlines have evaporated – it took more than 10 years of workshop work – giving way to an abstraction whose dynamism and spontaneity are intact. His patinated backgrounds still reveal the scars of the walls of the wasteland where he practiced so much. Contemplating a Mist canvas is to lose oneself in an abstract composition of hypnotic power, blending urban art with contemporary.
Experts now place him in the world top five alongside artists like Kaws and Futura.
The package will be well wrapped, sent with tracking and requiring a signature on delivery.
