Description from the seller
Antique Brass Preserving Pan - Large Jam Cauldron with Wrought Iron Handles - Late 19th / Early 20th Century
An authentic and charming antique brass preserving pan (also known as a jam cauldron or confiturier), dating back to the late 19th or early 20th century. Crafted from heavy-gauge brass, this traditional vessel features a beautifully wide, shallow basin designed historically for the rapid evaporation of moisture when boiling down fruits into jams and jellies.
The pan is flanked by two sturdy, upright copper/wrought iron loop handles, which are structurally secured to the body by heavy-duty metal rivets. The brass exhibits a gorgeous, authentic aged patina with minor signs of handling that underscore its long culinary history, including a fascinating, highly visible historic brazed/dovetail repair near the base—a testament to its survival and decades of utility. Though no longer suitable cooking, this timeless piece serves as an exceptional item for rustic kitchenalia collectors or as a high-end decorative country-house interior piece (ideal for use as a fireplace kindling holder, premium planter, or towel basin).
Condition: In good, structurally sound antique condition. Features an authentic, old-period brazed metal repair (welded cramp/dovetail joint) near the bottom edge. Minor surface scratches, slight oxidization, and small, age-appropriate dents which add to its rustic character. Firmly attached; rivets are tight and secure. Beautiful aged patina.
Material: Brass, Copper/Iron.
Period: Late 19th / Early 20th Century (Circa 1890–1910)
Country of Origin: France / United Kingdom
Dimensions: Diameter 28 cm, Height (excluding handles) 10 cm, Height (including handles) 21 cm, Weight: 1.46 kg
The object will be professionally packed with the utmost care using protective materials and shipped in a sturdy, double-walled cardboard box. Includes tracking code and transport insurance for peace of mind. It can also be collected from Amsterdam, The Netherlands
