Gerry Johansson – American Winter – MACK, 2018 (First Edition, Out of Print)
A massive, beautifully melancholic visual essay of the American Heartland by one of Sweden’s master documentary photographers.
Published in 2018 by the highly influential photography publisher MACK (London), American Winter (ISBN: 9781912339235) is an essential, heavy-volume addition to Gerry Johansson's celebrated geographical surveys (Sverige, Deutschland, Amerika).
Inspired by the stark, snow-swept isolation captured in the Coen brothers' film Fargo, Johansson spent two winters (2017–2018) driving completely alone through the semi-deserted, forgotten small towns of Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado.
True to his strict, uncompromising methodology, the book features 250 beautifully quiet, square-format black-and-white images. Rather than relying on a narrative flow, Johansson famously sequences the entire book alphabetically by location name, allowing each individual photograph to stand as its own objective, architectural monument.
The Interplay of Light and Snow: Using his preferred, reliable Rolleiflex camera, Johansson utilizes the low, merciless winter sun to cast long, geometric shadows against crisp white snow. The result is a striking aesthetic where the winter climate both hides and starkly reveals the decay of Art Deco brick schoolhouses, rusted 1950s cars, and forgotten Main Streets.
A Modern Classic: This thick, substantive volume (360 pages) perfectly captures the quiet underbelly of industrial decline and post-frontier abandonment. Out of print and highly regarded, it has become a staple for serious contemporary photobook collections.
Publisher: MACK, London (2018), First Edition Format: Thick cloth-bound hardcover (without dust jacket, as issued) Dimensions: 24.5cm x 17cm Pages: 360 pages, featuring 250 high-end tritone plates. An extraordinary, hauntingly beautiful masterpiece of straight-landscape photography.
