Description from the seller
English Victorian Black-Lacquered Brass Opera Glasses, c. 1880
A characterful pair of Victorian opera glasses dating from the late nineteenth century, crafted in brass with their original black lacquered finish. The elegant tapered barrels retain extensive traces of the original japanned surface, now beautifully worn through decades of use, revealing the warm brass beneath and creating a highly decorative patina.
The design is typical of quality Victorian theatre binoculars, featuring a central focusing wheel and extending brass barrels. The rich contrast between the aged black finish and exposed brass surfaces reflects the craftsmanship and aesthetic sensibilities of the period.
The honest wear and naturally developed surface character contribute significantly to the appeal of this example. The focusing mechanism remains operational and the optics are functional. The piece presents expected age-related wear, including losses to the original black lacquer, surface marks and oxidation consistent with over a century of use.
Materials: Brass, black lacquer, glass
Good antique condition with substantial age-related wear and losses to the original lacquered finish. The focusing mechanism operates and the optics remain functional.
