"The Louisiana Book", a photo book by Dutch photographer Rineke Dijkstra. Dijkstra, who studied photography at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, is influenced by works by Richard Avedon and Irving Penn, but Diane Arbus is the artist who resonates with him the most. Dijkstra produced a self-portrait after swimming in the pool to depict physical and mental instability, seeking new perspectives and expressions of her own; this is a series that continues to the present. She says it was a starting point. "Beach," a photograph of a teenager transitioning from child to adult; "New Mothers," which captures a woman who has just given birth; "Almerisa," which depicts the growth process of a woman; and young people gathering at a club. She is an artist who expresses originality as a photographer and the individuality of the subject by describing the instability and changes of people who are not normal and the process, such as the video work "The Buzz Club." This book is a collection of works published following a large retrospective exhibition held at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark and the Museum of Contemporary Art De Pont in the Netherlands from 2017 to 2018. A substantial book.
The Louisiana Book offers a retrospective survey of the life and work of the photographer. Scholars introduce her complete oeuvre chronologically in easy-to-read essays, providing information about her working methods and discussing her artistic development. Dijkstra’s best-known bodies of work are represented, including her long-term series of Beach Portraits (1992–2012), in a comprehensive section of color plates.
