Issei Suda
Asahi Sonorama/1978/Japanese/210*220*15
Fushi Kaden” is a collection of photographs by Kazumasa Suda, one of Japan's leading photographers. After graduating from the Tokyo College of Photography, he helped his family's construction materials wholesaler, which was newly established after the war. In the 1970s, he published one of the greatest masterpieces in the history of photography, “Kazashikaden,” which was taken during his travels throughout Japan, and in the late 1990s, he won the 16th Ken Domon Award for “Human Memory,” a collection of snaps taken over 30 years. Even today, the photographer Kazumasa Suda continues to actively showcase his work. This is the first edition of his “Fushikaden” book. Focusing on “festivals/halle” in Tohoku, Kanto, Hokuriku, Chubu, and other regions of Japan, Kazumasa Suda captures strange and bizarre scenes glimpsed in ordinary daily life by skillfully manipulating time, composition, and light and shadow, using the photographer's characteristic “gap” and “pause”.
