Set of 29 vintage wood printing blocks from Italy, in good used condition with minor signs of wear and staining, each block around 16 cm high, 6 cm wide and 2.5 cm deep, weighing about 4.6 kg in total, made of durable maple wood in a black finish, representing industrial design and printed letters for typography.
Description from the seller
Vintage wooden printing blocks, commonly used for traditional typography.
Material and Use: made of hard wood, these blocks were carved with mirrored letters or numbers to print large headlines on newspapers, posters, and placards.
Features: The blocks are arranged to show the mirror nature of the characters required for relief printing.
State: they show signs of wear, ink residue, and a patina that attest to historical use in the printing process.
Vintage wooden type characters were produced almost exclusively with slow-growing, very fine-grained hard wood, cut end-grain to withstand the immense pressures of the press and the moisture of the ink.
The blocks in the photo show the typical dark surface coloration due to the layering of greasy typographic inks and protective oils applied over the decades.
The letters are 16 cm tall and 2.5 cm thick.
Width varies depending on the letter, but most are 6 cm wide.
