Rare Byzantine Bronze Weight (6th–9th Century AD)

A rare Byzantine piece bearing three haloed busts in its upper section, executed in the Byzantine artistic style, with several lines of Greek inscriptions below rendered in an official manner, depicting the victory and coronation of the team or government of Giovanni Geli, and the defeat of his opponents Lato, Foviana, and Feletto Teccelli. The Greek inscriptions show administrative and official references and are likely related to the issuing authority or the official responsible for the weight, which is common among Byzantine weights of this period.

Previously owned in Spain (private collection) in 1991.
