Item Description
Sony PS-4750 — Direct Drive Stereo Turntable (Made in Japan, 1974)
A superb example of Sony's celebrated "Golden Era" of high-fidelity engineering, the PS-4750 is a direct-drive stereo turntable first released in Japan in October 1974 and produced through 1978. Rather than relying on polished wood and brushed aluminium for show, this model is a serious, instrument-grade design built around genuinely advanced technology for its time.
The platter and cabinet are constructed from SBMC (Sony Bulk Mould Compound), a composite material chosen for its excellent acoustic and vibration-absorbing properties, contributing to a clean signal-to-noise ratio. At its heart is a servo-controlled direct-drive DC motor combined with Sony's innovative Magnedisk speed-detection system, developed using the precision-measurement know-how of Sony Magnescale. A 512-wave signal magnetised around the periphery of the platter is read by a multi-gap head, allowing remarkably accurate and stable rotation that resists drift from temperature and ageing.
Further refinements include a two-speed operation (33-1/3 and 45 rpm), ±4% pitch controls, a high-visibility stroboscope, a statically balanced universal tonearm with anti-skating compensation, a cueing lever to protect record and stylus, and distinctive suction-cup ("sucker type") rubber insulation mats that hold the record firmly to the platter to suppress resonance. Quoted performance is 0.03% WRMS wow & flutter and a 70 dB S/N ratio.
This is the main unit, supplied with its power cord and RCA output cables. A cartridge is not included. Serial No. 209411.
Size
Height: 17.5 cm
Width: 47.7 cm
Depth: 42 cm
Weight
8050 g
Condition
Tested and fully functional: playback confirmed with the owner's own cartridge, with stable rotation speed and a correctly operating tonearm. Cosmetically there are light signs of age and use, scratches on the dust cover, and some corrosion on the dust-cover hinge brackets, but the unit is generally clean overall.
Artist Profile
Sony Corporation (founded 1946, Tokyo, Japan) is one of the world's most influential electronics manufacturers. During the 1970s, Sony invested heavily in high-fidelity audio, producing a respected line of direct-drive turntables that drew on its Magnescale precision-measurement technology. The PS-4750 sat in the serious mid-tier of this range, below flagships such as the PS-8750, and remains sought after by vintage audio enthusiasts today.
