Guido Bessi Studio - Figure - Stonelite

A figure of a young barefoot girl in a simple smock, holding her long plait in both hands as she glances down with a faint smile. Two chicks peck at her feet on the integral plinth, raised on a separate veined marble base.
The figure is cast in alabaster composite (the cream-coloured "alabastrite" / "Stonelite" material produced in Italy for the decorative market), with a soft matte surface and crisp modelling in the face, the gathered dress and the braided hair. It is signed in the mould "Studio Prof. G. Bessi" to the reverse of the base, and retains the original oval paper label "Stonelite – Made in Italy" to the underside of the marble plinth. The base is a slab of white and grey veined marble.
Guido Bessi was an Italian sculptor whose studio models of children and sentimental figures were widely produced in cast alabaster during the twentieth century and remain popular with collectors of Italian decorative sculpture.
Condition: Good
In good overall condition with age-appropriate wear. Some light surface marks and minor discolouration to the hair and dress, consistent with age and handling. The marble base shows natural veining inherent to the stone.
