About JONES:
An American Black woman, very attractive — Vance gave her the features of singer Whitney Houston — Jones is part of the U.S. Army as General Benjamin Carrington’s aide (and almost his adoptive daughter), who gradually becomes one of the most important characters.
Despite her central role, she remains largely mysterious. Indeed, her first name is unknown. She uses the forename Shirley in the third album All the Tears of Hell, but hints that it is false. The special album The XIII Mystery indicates that her identity papers list different first names, and thus none of these names can be taken as the real one.
Born in a Black ghetto in Chicago, Jones lives with her brother Marcus, with whom she has just escaped from an orphanage. Later integrated into the ranks of the famous Black Panthers, the young Marcus is chosen for a suicide mission. He owes his survival only to his sister’s intervention. It is at this moment that Jones meets General Carrington, then a colonel. He is the one who will enroll her in the boarding school for children of career officers. In two years, she catches up with her peers and enters the Fredericksburg officer school a year ahead.
She chooses aviation and, at twenty-four, having become a lieutenant in the Army Air Forces, she is also the aide to General Carrington.
It is while following the general to the Hualpai base in Arizona that Jones meets XIII. The general, who has complete confidence in her, gives her the mission to watch over XIII after identifying him. Jones, under the order of General Carrington, pretends to attack XIII to force him to defend himself, and it is thus that Benjamin Carrington shows that he has incredible reflexes.
She is later seen in Greenfalls, San Miguel, and then Costa Verde. Later, she is promoted to major for services to the American nation after having thwarted an attempted coup at SSH 1. But, in the assault, she was wounded in the abdomen and became sterile.
She eventually deserts the army to follow XIII to Latin America and help him recover his memory. In fact, she is in love — without having accepted his marriage proposal — with XIII, and it is mutual.
She will rejoin the army later with the rank of colonel.
