Description from the seller
A fine Chinese kraak porcelain plate from the Wanli period (1572–1620), Late Ming dynasty, decorated in underglaze cobalt blue.
The central medallion features a striking flying phoenix (Vermilion Bird) set within a landscape including bamboo and a pagoda, rendered in a lively and expressive style. The phoenix, one of the Four Sacred Creatures in Chinese mythology, symbolizes harmony, prosperity, and renewal.
The rim is divided into panels containing auspicious symbols, a typical feature of kraak porcelain produced for export. The reverse is unmarked and shows attractive kiln grid adhesions, characteristic of production in Jingdezhen kilns during this period.
Reference:
A comparable example is illustrated in Maura Rinaldi, Kraak Porcelain – A Moment in the History of Trade, p. 91, supporting a dating to circa 1590–1610, made in Jingdezhen for the export market.
Age:
Wanli period, Late Ming dynasty (circa 1590–1610)
Measurements:
Diameter: 20.0 cm
Height: 3.4 cm
Condition
No hairlines or restorations. Light rim wear and two small chips, visible in the photographs. Otherwise in good condition.
