Description from the seller
37 mm WWII Armor-P Piercing projectiles – Sculptural Pair on Turned Wooden Bases
Fascinating pair of authentic inertized 37 mm armor-piercing projectiles, transformed after the war into elegant decorative objects with a strong aesthetic and historical impact. A rare, scenographic ensemble where industrial design, military memory, and artisanal workmanship coexist in perfect balance.
The projectiles belong to the Armour Piercing (AP) type, kinetic-energy armor-piercing projectiles used during World War II against armored vehicles and defensive positions. The 37 mm caliber was one of the key protagonists of twentieth-century military ballistics, employed by both Allied and Axis forces on various European fronts.
The aerodynamic silhouette of solid steel, combined with the original copper driving bands, gives the whole piece an extraordinary visual presence. The metallic surfaces have been polished with a refined mirror finish, capable of highlighting the color contrast between the silvery steel and the golden copper of the ballistic crown.
The bases are made from turned solid wood and painted black, with shapes reminiscent of chess stylizations or modernist architectural elements. The slight wear of the paint, authentic and coherent with the object's age, helps create a highly decorative and credible patina, typical of post-war artistic transformations.
Very important note for collectors: the copper bands show no of the usual vertical marks left by rifling the barrel, a detail that suggests the projectiles were never fired. As kinetic armor-piercing rounds, these elements consist of solid steel and are completely inert and safe.
Ideal items for militaria collectors, professional studies, design libraries, industrial-chic environments, or contemporary Wunderkammer displays. Their dramatic presence immediately conveys the aesthetic power of twentieth-century war engineering.
Total height: 16 cm each
Base diameter: 7.5 cm
Single weight: about 530 g
Very good condition. Metal with a splendid aesthetic presence and natural patina of age. Slight signs and minor wear on the wooden bases consistent with age and use, as visible in the photos.
