Description from the seller
Splendid and imposing cross for an altar (or blessing) Russian Orthodox in cast bronze/brass, dating back to the 19th century (or earlier). This object is a classic example of the refined metallurgical production tied to the tradition of the Old Believers (Staroveri).
The front shows a complex iconography centered on the Crucifixion of Christ, flanked on the side plaques by the Pious Women (Mary and Mary Magdalene) on the left, and by Saint John with the Centurion Longinus on the right. The upper part is rich in three‑dimensional details, with Cherubim, adoring Angels, and the Mandylion (Holy Face).
The back is entirely relief-decorated with a prayer in ancient Ecclesiastical Slavic dedicated to venerating the Holy Cross. The original and intact suspension eyelet is present.
State of preservation:
Excellent vintage condition with a magnificent patina original to the time. The casting details are very sharp and not worn. Small residues of green oxidation (verdigris) natural in the recesses, which confer charm and attest to its authenticity. No restoration or modern alteration.
