Description from the seller
An unusual silver-plated novelty toast rack by Francis Howard Ltd., Sheffield, circa 1900, of elegant form with nine divisions, the uprights surmounted by finely modelled thistle-head finials and centred by a loop carrying handle, raised on spherical feet. The distinctive thistle ornament lends the piece a strong decorative character, while the flowing lines reflect the craftsmanship of the late Victorian period.
Marked to the underside with the maker’s mark of Francis Howard Ltd., Sheffield, comprising the initials F.H.S., with the firm's distinctive archery target trademark positioned between the letters H and S.
Founded in Sheffield, the centre of England’s cutlery and silver-plating industry, Francis Howard Ltd. was known for producing quality wares for both the domestic and export markets during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The firm’s products are noted for their sound workmanship and attractive period designs.
Retaining an attractive aged patina, the rack remains both practical and decorative. A charming and uncommon example of late Victorian silver-plated tableware, combining functionality with an appealing novelty design.
Good overall condition with light age-related wear and surface imperfections commensurate with age and use.
