F. Primavesi & Son of Cardiff, a large oval transferware earthenware serving tray from the Victorian era (circa 1860–1873), in good condition with minor signs of age, measuring 48 cm wide by 38 cm high and 4 cm deep.
Description from the seller
Very Rare Monumental Oval Serving Tray – F. Primavesi & Son (Cardiff) – Victorian Antiquities Excellent (1860-1873) – Museum-Grade Condition,
At auction a piece of extraordinary historical and collecting importance: a large oval serving tray in fine earthenware (Ironstone / Earthenware) dating to the second half of the 19th century (full Victorian period, about 160 years of history).
Not a ordinary piece of antique pottery, but a masterpiece commissioned from the famous Staffordshire manufactories and distributed by the historic Welsh house "F. Primavesi & Son - Cardiff". The exact marking on the singular ampersand (“& Son”) allows academic and rigorous dating between 1860 and 1873: an era when the quality of British manufacturing dominated the world.
The Decor and Visual Impact:
The tray is decorated with the transferware technique in a warm, deep sepia/brown tone. The central scene is a triumph of Neoclassical and pastoral taste: allegorical female figures, monumental vases, and architectures of olden times merge in a design of extraordinary clarity. The edge is enriched by a complex geometric and floral frame interrupted by panels that reprise the main theme. A piece that alone furnishings a room.
Conditions (The real strength):
Finding a serving tray of this size, with more than a century and a half of life, completely intact is a once-in-a-lifetime event. Often these objects arrive to the present day cracked, chipped or heavily restored.
This specimen is a miracle of preservation: no breaks, no crazing, no glueing, no hidden restoration. The back is exceptionally clean and sound, showing only the wonderful patina of time and the genuineness of its original workmanship.
An unmissable opportunity for elite collectors of English porcelain or for those seeking a unique antique piece, authentic and of indisputable economic and historical value.
