Description from the seller
Imperial Russia, late 19th – early 20th century (c. 1890–1910)
A small and refined devotional Orthodox icon depicting Christ the Savior (Spas), painted in tempera on a wooden panel and clothed by a suggestive original chalice (oklad) in chased gilded metal.
The oklad features rich decoration with geometric motifs and a radiated halo adorned with numerous almond-shaped applications in ruby-colored glass paste, as well as two green elements in the upper corners, also made in glass paste or colored glass. The face of Christ, left uncovered according to Orthodox iconographic tradition, shows a painting execution of notable quality, with harmonious lines and intense spiritual expressiveness with high detail.
The work belongs to the tradition of Russian popular icons produced between the end of the 19th century and the early 20th century for private domestic devotion, characterized by the union of sacred painting and decorative metallic coverings.
