AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Beautiful and authentic mechanical thermograph (temperature recorder) of top quality, mid-20th century, manufactured by the renowned German maker R. Fuess (Berlin-Steglitz).
This specific example has a rich, official history and was extensively used at the KNMI (Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute). On top of the housing there is the original KNMI inventory plate (reference: image.png). On the side is mounted the original factory plate from R. Fuess with serial number 1413596 (reference: image_4.png).
Operation and Details
The instrument is fully mechanical. On the right side there is a sensitive bimetal element (protected by a metal cage, see image_5.png) that responds to temperature fluctuations. Via a fine-mechanics linkage system this moves the long writing arm with ink cartridge (image_7.png). The arm records the temperature live on the registration paper roll.
The drum is driven by an built-in mechanical clockwork that can be wound with the included key (image_3.png). The clockwork can be set for a rotation of 1 day or 7 days ("1 Umdr. in 1 oder 7 Tgn."). The sturdy metal housing is finished with a classic gray hammer-tone paint and can be folded open to replace the paper or ink (image_10.png).
Condition and Status
Visual: In exceptionally neat and clean condition. The hammer-tone finish is very well preserved and shows only minimal signs of use for its age. The glass is scratch-free and intact.
Mechanical: The instrument is visually complete with the original winding key and writing arm. (Optional: The clockwork has been tested and keeps good time / The clockwork is untested).
A splendid historic-scientific object with a beautiful story. Perfect as an eye-catcher in an industrial interior, for collectors of meteorological instruments, or enthusiasts of maritime/scientific antiques.
