Nickel commemorative 1 Rupee coin issued on the occasion of the 2500th anniversary of Buddhism, featuring on the reverse a stylized stupa surrounded by geometric rays symbolizing spiritual diffusion. The obverse shows an elaborate ornamental composition with the value in Sinhala framed by vegetal motifs and accompanied by English legends around the perimeter. The specimen stands out for its excellent state of preservation, with intense original luster, clean fields and well-defined reliefs, with minimal contact marks. This issue reflects the cultural and religious significance of Buddhism in Ceylon during the mid-20th century.
