Description from the seller
PROVOKE – Complete Reprint of 3 Volumes
Koji Taki, Takuma Nakahira, Yutaka Takanashi, Takahiko Okada, Daido Moriyama, Gozo Yoshimasu
This is the complete reprint edition of the legendary Japanese photography magazine PROVOKE, originally published in only three issues between 1968 and 1969.
PROVOKE was first conceived in November 1968 by art critic Koji Taki and photographer Takuma Nakahira, together with poet Takahiko Okada and photographer Yutaka Takanashi. From the second issue, Daido Moriyama also joined the group. Under the subtitle “Provocative Materials for Thought,” the magazine combined photography, essays, and poetry, challenging conventional ideas of photographic expression.
Although only three issues were ever published, PROVOKE became one of the most influential movements in postwar Japanese photography. Its radical visual language — rough grain, blurred images, unstable compositions, and out-of-focus photographs — later became widely known as “Are, Bure, Boke”: grainy, blurry, and out of focus.
At the time, this style caused both praise and controversy, but it went on to have a lasting impact not only on photography, but also on contemporary art and visual culture. Original copies of PROVOKE are now extremely rare and highly sought after by collectors, making this complete reprint edition an important opportunity to experience the full publication in detail.
This 2018 NITESHA reprint faithfully reproduces all three original issues and includes text in Japanese, English, and Chinese, making it especially valuable for collectors, researchers, and admirers of Japanese avant-garde photography.
