A pair of antique Victorian 'press-back' Windsor armchairs
Set of two English Windsor armchairs, model 'Captain’s Chair'.
Dating: Late Victorian, circa 1880–1900.
Material: Entirely constructed from solid oak with a rich, lived-in patina.
Description:
An exceptionally matching pair of antique Windsor chairs of high quality. The chairs feature a characteristic 'press-back' crest rail with finely detailed woodcarving (rococo/roundel motif). The construction shows the classic Windsor features: a deeply scooped saddle seat, continuous spindles and turned legs connected by an H-shaped stretcher for maximum stability.
Condition:
The chairs are in an authentic, unrestored state. Structurally very solid with the original mortise-and-tenon joints. The wood shows beautiful natural wear on the armrests and seat, appropriate to age. There are normal cracks consistent with age, which do not affect stability. Free from active woodworm.
