This Pende mask of the Kiwoyo type, also known in some regions under the name Muyombo, is characterized by a particularly original construction combining a sculpted face with a long vertical plate. The domed forehead topped with a tall cylindrical headdress, half-closed eyes, a powerful nose, and a slightly ajar mouth compose a physiognomy imbued with gravity and restraint. The facial volumes are highlighted by a sober polychromy where brown-reddish, black, and light tones alternate. The lower part, decorated with carved and painted geometric motifs, extends the mask into an elongated form that accentuates its verticality and monumental character. The whole testifies to the refined aesthetics of the Pende sculptors, renowned for their sense of balance between stylization and expressiveness.

Among the Pende of the Democratic Republic of Congo, masks play a central role in community ceremonies, initiations, and manifestations related to social order.
