Reproduction of an Ifé-style bronze statue from Benin, depicting a queen mother’s head, weighing 1.2 kg, in good condition, dating to the late 20th century, sold with a stand.
Description from the seller
Large and heavy African statue in Ifé style from Benin in bronze -
Statue representing the head of a queen mother.
Benin art is described as court art because it is tightly associated with the king, known as the Oba. The tradition of bronze court objects from Ifé dates back to the 14th century. The many heads and brass statues created by Benin artists were reserved for the exclusive use of the royal palace inhabitants and, most often, placed on altars consecrated by each new Oba. These rectangular-shaped altars were topped with heads, statues, carved ivory tusks, bells and staffs. They served to commemorate an Oba and to contact his spirit.
