Description from the seller
Nigeria
Ifé
African bronze
Height: 330mm
Width: 265mm
Depth: 20mm
Weight: 2650g
Technique: lost-wax casting (unique piece)
Plaque depicting a king or a horseman warrior. A coating plaque cast in the lost-wax process, likely representing a war chief or an emissary, and in any case an important dignitary of the royal court, wearing the overlapping necklaces of long coral beads and a collar of leopard teeth turned around, emblematic attributes of the Oba's court, the ruler (or king) of the old Benin Kingdom.
Benin art is described as court art because it is closely associated with the king, known as the Oba. The tradition of Ifé bronze court objects dates back to the 14th century. These rectangular altars were topped with heads, statues, carved ivory tusks, bells and staffs. They served to commemorate an oba and to contact his spirit.
