Pyromorphite is a mineral belonging to the apatite group and composed of lead chlorophosphate: Pb5(PO4)3Cl, which, at times, is found in sufficiently high concentrations to permit its extraction as a lead ore. Pyromorphite is part of a series with mimetite (Pb5(AsO4)3Cl) and vanadinite (Pb5(VO4)3Cl), and the similarity of external characteristics among these three minerals is such that they are usually distinguishable only by chemical analysis.
