Description from the seller
Rare vintage auto grille badge – S. Gottardo (Gotthard Pass), Switzerland – circa 1950s
Beautiful and authentic collectible from the golden age of European motoring. This original metal auto grille badge recalls a passage about the famous Gotthard Pass (S. Gottardo), one of the most iconic Alpine passes in Europe.
In the fifties, motorists attached such souvenir plates to the grille or body of their car as tangible proof of their journey over challenging mountain roads. The badge shows the characteristic buildings at the pass summit and bears the historical elevation mark "Mt. 2094", referring to the height used at the time.
In the depicted car is a streamlined post-war model, typical of the early 1950s and comparable to vehicles such as the Fiat 1400. The design breathes the mood of post-war travel, when driving through the Alps stood for freedom, adventure and technical progress.
