The subject is Budai (known in the West as the 'Laughing Buddha'), a figure in Buddhist and Chinese tradition associated with happiness, generosity, and wealth.
The Children (Pueri): Budai is almost always depicted surrounded by children who play on him. They represent fertility, the continuity of lineage, and family joy.
The Sack: He is often shown with a large sack, said to contain treasures or gifts for the needy, but which never empties.

Stile e Fattura

The Base: The wooden base is custom-made to fit perfectly with the irregular shapes of the raw carved stone. The carved motif is a classic 'cloud' or 'Ruyi' style.
Details: The figures are carved in a dynamic style. Note how the artisan has tried to follow the natural veins of the stone to give volume to the bodies.

​I Bambini (Pueri): Budai è quasi sempre raffigurato circondato da bambini che giocano su di lui. Rappresentano la fertilità, la continuità della stirpe e la gioia familiare.
​Il Sacco: Si vede spesso Budai con un grande sacco, che si dice contenga tesori o regali per i bisognosi, ma che non si svuota mai.

 Stile e Fattura

​La Base: La base in legno è realizzata su misura per incastrarsi perfettamente con le forme irregolari della pietra grezza scolpita. Il motivo a intaglio è un classico stile "a nuvola" o "Ruyi".
​Dettagli: Le figure sono scolpite con uno stile dinamico. Nota come l'artigiano abbia cercato di seguire le vene naturali della pietra per dare volume ai corpi.
