Obsidian is a volcanic glass whose formation is due to the very rapid cooling of lava, always rich in silicate ions. Obsidian is a natural glass, completely similar to the human-made one.

A raw material highly sought after in antiquity for the manufacture of sharp tools (primarily knives) and it was one of the commodities that animated trade in the Mediterranean and sustained the economic life of the mining sites. Today it is still worked into small decorative objects, jewelry, and blades for scalpels.
