Description from the seller
Pair of Original Thonet Bentwood Armchairs – Late 19th / Early 20th Century – Austria – Provenance Former Priest's Residence
An elegant and authentic pair of original Thonet bentwood armchairs, crafted in Austria during the late 19th to early 20th century (circa 1890–1910).
These chairs originate from a former priest's residence near ’s-Hertogenbosch (Den Bosch), the Netherlands, where they remained together for many decades. Both chairs retain original Thonet markings, including impressed stamps and remnants of the original paper labels, confirming their authenticity.
Produced during the golden age of Thonet craftsmanship, the chairs display the refined bentwood construction for which the company became internationally renowned.
The beautifully curved armrests, warm aged beechwood and original hand-woven cane seats create a timeless appearance that fits perfectly within Art Nouveau, Secession, Historicist and traditional interiors.
Although the backrests feature two slightly different designs, the chairs share the same construction quality, dimensions, patina and visual character. Together they form a highly decorative and harmonious pair.
The chairs have survived in remarkably well-preserved condition for more than a century. The cane seats remain intact, the frames are stable and strong, and the wood has developed a rich patina that can only be achieved through age and careful use.
According to the previous owner, the chairs were used for many years within the priest's residence, adding an appealing historical provenance to an already desirable pair of original Thonet armchairs.
