Old-coloured map of Denmark by Gerard Mercator. It shows Denmark, including Holstein and Mecklenburg, with Rügen to the south and southern Sweden to the north. In the top right-hand corner is a beautifully coloured title cartouche; in the bottom left-hand corner, in the North Sea, is a whale. The water areas are depicted with a distinctive wave pattern.
