Description from the seller
Origin: Côte d'Ivoire
Tribe name: Baoulé
Material: Wood
Dimension: H 42 cm. L 22 cm
Shipping method: Colissimo within 24-48h. Open.
This work is a magnificent example of a Mblo decorative mask, stemming from the rich artistic tradition of the Baoulé in Côte d'Ivoire.
Unlike many other West African masks that represent spiritual entities or mythical ancestors, Mblo masks are portraits. They are intended to honor a specific and respected individual in the community, or to embody an ideal of beauty and wisdom.
The face exudes a deep calm. The almond-shaped, half-closed eyes are a signature of Baoulé aesthetics; they symbolize restraint, wisdom, reserve, and inner intelligence.
Elaborate hairstyle: The summit of the mask is crowned with a complex coiffure, adorned with a sculpted figure (here resembling a bird or a stylized zoomorphic motif). This addition testifies to great artisanal mastery and highlights the social status or importance of the represented person.
Scarifications: The finely chiseled details on the temples and cheeks represent traditional scarifications. These motifs add to the portrait's realism and reinforce the sophisticated character of the object.
Cultural Significance
In Baoulé society, Mblo masks are not secret sacred objects. They are used during public dance performances and entertainment, also called Mblo. At these events, the dancer wears the mask and imitates the gestures or character of the person depicted, thus allowing the community to celebrate the moral and social qualities of that individual.
These masks are considered one of the most refined expressions of African sculptural art due to their humanism, perfect symmetry, and meticulous attention to detail.
