Description from the seller
Canon Canonet S — 35mm Rangefinder Camera with SE 45mm f/1.7 (1964)
Hello from Japan!
We provide high-quality cameras and lenses to the world.
Released in 1964, the Canon Canonet S is the successor to the original Canonet and a landmark in Canon's history: it was the first Canon camera produced with the company's automated design technology. Compared with the original Canonet, the film advance lever was moved from the baseplate to the top of the body, and the original selenium meter was replaced with a more sensitive CdS exposure meter (extending the low-light range to EV 2.5).
The fixed lens is the fast Canon Lens SE 45mm f/1.7, a six-element, four-group design that is well regarded for its sharpness and rendering. Exposure is shutter-priority automatic: the photographer selects the shutter speed and the camera sets the aperture (with a manual aperture range and an AUTO latch on the ring). The leaf shutter is a Copal-SV with speeds of 1 to 1/500 sec plus B, X/M flash sync, and a PC socket. The bright coupled rangefinder shows the aperture scale in the finder, the film-speed range is ASA 25-800, and the minimum focusing distance is 0.8 m. A self-timer is built into the lens barrel. This is a classic, well-built Japanese rangefinder from the golden age of the fixed-lens compact.
Lens / Filter Thread
This is a fixed-lens camera; there is no interchangeable mount. A filter can be screwed onto the front thread (please check the photos for the fitting).
Condition: USED — Excellent
Pre-owned, with light signs of use. The body remains clean and attractive. The camera powers on and the exposure meter works; please read the optical and functional notes below carefully.
Serial Number
Please check the photo.
Appearance
Clean and attractive overall, with only light signs of use. Please check the photos for details.
Optical Condition
The lens itself is clear, with no significant haze, fungus, scratches, or balsam separation observed. However, there is haze inside the viewfinder. Because of this finder haze, the in-finder exposure (aperture) readout and the rangefinder double-image patch are a little harder to see, although focusing remains usable.
Functional
The camera powers on and the CdS exposure meter operates (shutter-priority automatic exposure). The shutter operates well across the speed range; at the slow speed of 1/8 sec it occasionally hesitates. The self-timer functions, though it is a little sluggish. Focusing via the coupled rangefinder works.
Light Seals
Light seals have been partially replaced.
Battery
The exposure meter is a CdS type and requires a battery to operate. A battery is not included; please use an appropriate cell for this model.
Bundled Items
- Canon Canonet S camera body
- Canon front lens cap
No case, strap, or battery is included. Only the items shown in the photos are included.
