Wooden Ethiopian Coptic Procession Cross from Ethiopia, provenance Galeriehouder / Antiekhandelaar, measuring 42.5 cm high and 23.5 cm wide, in excellent condition.
Description from the seller
Ethiopian wooden Coptic Procession Cross from the Orthodox Coptic Church.
This wooden cross measures approximately 42.5 cm high and 23.5 cm wide
For the Ethiopian Church, the cross is not only a symbol of Christ's suffering and death; more importantly, its meaning lies beyond indications of the resurrection. The cross often embodies a liberating and protective effect in Ethiopian depictions of the place of the crucifixion, and expresses not only admiration for the dead Christ, but is also fulfilled as an icon.
This function is expressed clearly in the prayer designated as "The Protective Wall of the Crosses."
The multitude of processional crosses carried by priests during services and religious meetings creates an atmosphere of sacrality and release, and symbolically points the believer along the path of life.
Processional crosses are manufactured in the wax fuse procedure.
