Star Wars, later renamed Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope, is a 1977 film written and directed by George Lucas, who was also its executive producer.

Produced by Lucasfilm and distributed by 20th Century Fox, it is the first film released in the franchise of the same name, as well as the fourth chronological chapter in the “Skywalker Saga.” Set in an imaginary galaxy ruled by the tyrannical Galactic Empire, the story follows a group of freedom fighters known as the Rebel Alliance, who aim to destroy the Empire's new weapon, the Death Star.

The film's ensemble cast includes Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Peter Cushing, Alec Guinness, Anthony Daniels, Kenny Baker, Peter Mayhew, David Prowse, and James Earl Jones.

Filming began on March 22, 1976, and ended on July 16 of the same year. Star Wars grossed a total of $798 million globally, making it the highest-grossing film in cinema history at the time, until the release of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982). In the United States, when adjusted for inflation, Star Wars remains the second highest-grossing film of all time (after Gone with the Wind), with over 178 million tickets sold.
