AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Prehistoric Flint Tool (Axe/ scraper) – Neolithic Drenthe – Old Collection A. de Boer

Description: a beautiful, sturdy and authentic prehistoric flint tool (probably a rough, unpolished axe head or a heavy core scraper) from the Neolithic (New Stone Age). This artifact shows the typical, powerful knapping technique of the early Drenthe farmers. The object is made from a characteristic northern erratic flint and has a striking yellow-brown to rust-brown outer layer (patina/cortex).

On the left side, due to an old fracture, the very dark, almost black flint core is beautifully visible. This object has a definite and valuable provenance. It is equipped with the original, handwritten inventory numbers ("AB.9" and "DR 44 H.2").

Additional information from the collection history:
This object is an officially registered item from the former private collection of the well-known Dutch archaeologist A. de Boer. De Boer was known within the Dutch archaeological world for his meticulous fieldwork and the systematic cataloging of his prehistoric finds.

The manual labels on this artifact reflect his methodical approach:
Catalog number AB.9: This head number directly refers to the original collection inventory of A. de Boer.
Origin code DR: The specific regional coding for Drenthe, combined with the find-site code 44 H.2.

Specific Determination (Typology & Context): Morphology / Typology:
Rugged Neolithic tool (rough axe form or core scraper). The piece shows a clearly egg-shaped structure with surrounding prehistoric retouch marks to define the functional form.

Chronology: Attributed to the Neolithic (New Stone Age, ca. 3000 - 4000 BC), the period of the Drenthe Funnel Beaker Culture (the megalith builders).
Condition: Excellent, stable archaeological condition with a beautifully weathered color and patina. Completely free of modern restorations or recent damage.

Type: Neolithic axe/core scraper

We do not ship to Switzerland, the United Kingdom, or outside the EU.
