As advertised at the time, "when someone beats Sony it’s still Sony," the Sony EL 7 is truly as close as you can get to an open-reel tape recorder. An innovation that blended the fidelity of reel-to-reel machines with the practicality and convenience of a compact unit. I must say, personally, the sound is exceptional and a piece for true connoisseurs and collectors. In fact, the tape width and the 9.5 cm/s playback speed are the same as on reels, and they are the secret of the Sony EL 7. A real pleasure to look at and to listen to!
N.B.
For accuracy, please note that as visible in the photo there is a small scratch on the lower left edge of the front panel and some light marks on the upper aluminum flange of the case due to the stacking of other electronics. In particular, the front scratch of about one centimeter is visible only from certain angles and in backlight.
Another note I wish to provide to the future buyer concerns the proper functioning of the device. Specifically, as recommended by Sony itself, the Elcassette tape must always be kept taut. For this purpose a small tool similar to a screwdriver was supplied to perform this procedure manually. I recommend checking, with every winding or advance, that the tape is always well taut to avoid tangling inside the cassette.
