Nero was Roman emperor from AD 54 to 68. The last of the Julio-Claudian dynasty, he is known for a controversial rule marked by luxury, excesses, and persecutions. During his reign there was the great Fire of Rome (AD 64), for which he was accused, though his responsibility is uncertain. He loved the arts and performed in public, something frowned upon at the time. He died by suicide after being declared a public enemy by the Senate.
