Description from the seller
Canon Canonet QL19 — 35mm Rangefinder with Fixed 45mm f/1.9 Lens
Hello from Japan!
We provide high-quality cameras and lenses to the world.
IMPORTANT — Please read carefully:
- The built-in light meter does NOT work. Because of this, the shutter-priority auto-exposure ("A") setting cannot be relied upon.
- The camera CAN still be used fully in manual mode: the mechanical Copal leaf shutter fires at the selected speed independently of the meter and battery.
This is a genuine defect, not a cosmetic note. Please read the Known Issues section and check every photo before bidding.
About this camera
The Canon Canonet QL19 is a 35mm coupled-rangefinder camera from Canon's well-loved Canonet QL series, introduced in 1965. It pairs a fast 45mm f/1.9 lens (5 elements in 4 groups, closest focus 0.8 m) with a mechanical Copal leaf shutter (B, 1–1/500 sec) and offers shutter-priority automatic exposure with full manual override. The "QL" stands for Canon's Quick Loading system, which made film loading fast and reliable. This is the original full-size QL19, distinct from the later, smaller "New" Canonet QL19 and from the G-III model. Made in Japan.
Type and Operation
This is a fixed-lens camera — the 45mm f/1.9 lens is built in and is not interchangeable. The camera supports a manual mode (aperture and shutter speed set by hand, working mechanically) and a shutter-priority auto mode (which depends on a working light meter — non-functional on this body). The meter was originally powered by a 1.35V mercury cell (PX625 / MR9 type), a battery that is no longer commercially available; in any case the meter does not function here, so the camera is intended for use in manual mode.
Condition: USED — Fair
Pre-owned. Cosmetically and optically very clean; graded Fair because of the non-working light meter described below. The camera remains fully usable as a manual rangefinder.
Serial Number
Please check the photo.
Appearance
Very clean, with almost no scratches. The chrome top plate shows some minor age-related spotting/speckling. Please check the photos for details.
Optical Condition
The lens is very clear. No fungus, no haze, no balsam separation, and no noticeable cleaning scratches were observed. The viewfinder and rangefinder patch are clean and clear.
Functional
- Shutter (mechanical Copal leaf shutter): Operates; usable in manual mode at the marked speeds.
- Focusing / rangefinder: Operates.
- Film advance, rewind, and QL Quick Loading: Operate.
- Aperture ring: Operates.
- Light meter / auto-exposure: Does NOT work (see Known Issues).
- Light seals: This camera uses woven/flocked (pile-type) light seals rather than foam. These do not crumble or deteriorate the way foam seals do, so no replacement is required.
Known Issues
- The built-in CdS light meter is non-functional. The shutter-priority auto-exposure mode cannot be used reliably. Please shoot in manual mode using an external light meter (for example, a handheld meter or a smartphone metering app).
