Dan African wooden dance mask from Côte d'Ivoire.
All Dan masks are sacred; they do not represent spirits, they are the spirits.
This type of mask is characteristic of the art of the Dan people (who live mainly in Côte d'Ivoire and Liberia).
In Dan culture, masks are not mere decorative objects or theatrical disguises: they are regarded as receptacles of forest spirits (du) who wish to interact with the human world and participate in community life.
According to its specific form – here a mask with elongated, split eyes, sometimes described as a feminine mask or of the Deangle / Tankagle type – it fulfilled several major social and spiritual functions:
Initiation and education: These oval, gentle, serene-faced masks frequently appeared during initiation rites in the bush camps. The mask bearer acted as an intermediary, came to supply food to the newly initiated from the village women, and conveyed moral teachings to them.
Entertainment and social cohesion: Unlike more aggressive justice masks (with round or tubular eyes), this type of mask often participated in public festivities. Through graceful dances, singing, and poems, it entertained the villagers, blessed the community, and strengthened social bonds.
Mediation and protection: The spirit embodied by the mask watched over the village. Outside ceremonies, the inner face, with its patina of use and its perforations for fixing the headdress or costume), sometimes received offerings and libations to activate and honor its protective spiritual power.
