Description from the seller
Ivory Coast
Baoulé
Wood
Height: 340 mm
Width: 175 mm
Depth: 105 mm
African wooden mask from the Baoulé ethnic group of Ivory Coast.
Collected in Bouaké in central Ivory Coast.
This type of mask was used mainly for:
- Dances of rejoicing and public entertainments.
- Village feasts and community celebrations.
- Honors to a person esteemed for beauty, prestige, character or dancing talent.
- Some ceremonies related to funerals or large social gatherings, but in a register more honorific than funeral.
Mblo masks were often “idealized portraits” of a real person. The dancer wearing the mask symbolically embodied this person and highlighted the qualities admired by Baoulé society: beauty, wisdom, dignity, self-control and respect.
Regarding the small female figurine at the top:
it generally evokes social status, fertility, the continuity of the lineage, or an honored figure; this type of crest is common on Baoulé prestige masks intended for celebratory performances.
This mask is representative of Baoulé art, with a balance between shapes and volumes and finely carved details.
Packages are shipped Monday through Saturday with insurance and a tracking number.
Delivery in France takes 1 to 3 days via Chronopost, 2 to 5 days across the European Union.
Delivery to the rest of Europe and worldwide with Colissimo International.
