Original Hans Brockhage Schommelwagen VW Beetle, dating to ca. 1940–1950, made of bent beech wood with rubber‑tired wheels, measures about 38 × 99 × 38 cm and weighs 4 kg, originating from Berggiesshübel, DDR, Germany, in excellent condition with minor wear and patina authentic to the era, Bauhaus design.
Description from the seller
- status: this concerns an original old specimen with wooden wheels and rubber tires, in good condition with minor damage to the seat, see photos. There are also light signs of wear. The axles show a light patina, which I have left as is because it testifies to authenticity.
Hans Brockhage (1925–2009) was a German designer, artist and woodworker.
During his studies at the Art Academy in Dresden (after WWII) he worked under Mart Stam.
In 1950 he designed the first children's design that made him world-famous: a reversible “swing-wagon / push chair / rocking chair” for children.
It was originally designed in 1950 — not as a classic rocking chair, but as a flexible multifunctional children's object that could be a swing (wagon) as well as a push chair depending on how you placed it.
Material: bent beech wood / beech solid wood + plywood/seat, wheels with rubber (for mobility) according to later productions.
Dimensions (for an original version): about 38 × 99 × 38 cm.
Thanks to its clever design, this wagon was awarded the Spiel gut prize in 1956 — an acknowledgment of especially good toys/design.
