British photographer Michael Kenna is extremely popular in Japan. Although his subjects are not particularly unusual landscapes—but rather scenes that we Japanese have seen on a daily basis—the “Japan” captured by Michael Kenna offers a fresh sense of wonder. True to the words of Shinzo Fukuhara, who laid the foundation for Japanese landscape photography and once described photography as “poetry (haiku) in a condensed form,” the landscapes here are imbued with a poetic quality that stimulates the viewer’s imagination.
