Aperture/2014/English/240*170*15
“The Bikeriders” is a photo book by Brooklyn, New York-born photographer Danny Ryan. Ryan studied history as a student and, in the 1960s, documented the civil rights movement, publishing the self-curated photo book “The Movement.” Since then, he has released works such as “Conversations with the Dead,” a collection of portraits of inmates at a Texas prison, and has created numerous works focusing on antisocial themes. In addition to his intimate depictions of outsiders from the inside, his expressive, poetic prose is superb, and he is renowned for his rich documentary works that blend visuals and text. This book is Ryan’s first solo photo book, published in 1968, and is a social documentary depicting the daily lives of Chicago biker riders. Ryan himself became a member of the biker community, capturing the riders’ strong spirit and the deep love and friendship that dwell within them. This is a timeless masterpiece of documentary photography by Danny Ryan, who continued to discover the “beauty” of humanity and the human heart amidst “evil” and “wickedness.”
