Mercedes-Benz 220D W115, year 1969.
Description from the seller
GENERAL STRUCTURE
We present an extraordinary unit of the legendary Mercedes-Benz 220 D W115 from 1969, belonging to the early units manufactured of the historic /8 series (Strich-Acht). Launched at the end of 1967, this generation designed by the renowned Paul Bracq revolutionized the brand by introducing a completely new chassis with semi-trailing arm rear suspension, breaking with the traditional front axles used before. The 2.2-liter OM615 engine delivering 60 horsepower, fitted to this version, became the gold standard of diesel reliability of the era, laying the foundations of Mercedes-Benz’s indestructibility reputation worldwide. The early W115s are particularly prized among collectors, especially in Germany, where early units command higher values due to their numerous exclusive details compared to later versions, making this model a piece with enormous potential for value growth, ready for collection, display, or immediate enjoyment.
BODYWORK AND PAINT
The vehicle has undergone partial restoration while preserving its absolute originality. The bodywork has been completely repainted in its factory-original color, looking flawless and faithful to the period. To complement the model’s elegance, it also features new whitewall tires, perfectly in tune with the exterior aesthetics of late-1960s luxury sedans.
MECHANICS
Mechanically, more than €20,000 has been invested in a thorough restoration and maintenance process. A comprehensive mechanical overhaul has been carried out, along with a complete restoration of steering, suspension, brakes, transmission, and differential. Silent blocks, shock absorbers, seals, hoses, hydraulic components, and various wear parts have also been replaced. The mechanical work concludes with the restoration of the injection pump and the replacement of numerous components with new, original parts, ensuring optimal operation.
INTERIOR
This unit preserves one of the most emblematic and currently hard-to-find elements, namely the elegant steering-column gear selector, a typical feature of late-60s classic Mercedes-Benz. It also features the exceptional original configuration with a three-abreast front bench seat, a rarity practically vanished today and highly valued by genuine brand enthusiasts. The cabin maintains the aesthetic purity of the early series by preserving its original layout without front headrests, and includes front seat belts as a period accessory. The interior retains much of its original upholstery, partially restored only where necessary. A special mention deserves the original Becker Grand Prix radio, completely restored and working perfectly, a scarce device currently valued close to €1,000 in the classic car market.
DOCUMENTATION
In administrative and historical terms, the vehicle is up to date and ready to drive, with its Technical Inspection (ITV) fully valid and in force. The car also retains its original maintenance book, a document of great historical value for collectors that certifies the care received and provides complete transparency about this exclusive unit’s history over the years.
PICK-UP
The car can be collected in the Province of Seville, Spain. The vehicle must be removed from the seller’s premises within 7 days of acquisition. If not, there will be a daily deposit charge of €25 that the buyer must pay at the time of collection.
OTHER INFORMATION
This unit precisely gathers what collectors seek in a true early W115, blending early-series specifications, the steering-wheel-mounted gear selector, the front bench seat, the original configuration, and a comprehensive restoration. All this results in an elegant aesthetic that is very difficult to replicate today in the historic vehicle market.

Catawiki always aims to offer you the best possible buying experience. Our experts virtually review and select every vehicle in line with our submission guidelines and we require our sellers to provide the most accurate description of the vehicle. However, providing a fully detailed analysis of the vehicle is extremely difficult, and close to impossible. To guide you, we ask our sellers to provide information about the vehicle’s condition. Please consider that most vehicles for sale are classic vehicles and they often already have a whole life behind them, meaning that even a condition 1 or 2 vehicle might need maintenance to be ready for the road. It is advised to carefully read our submission guidelines that further describe details about the condition grades and types to manage your expectations. Cars are sold “as is”, meaning as described and in the condition they are in at the time of the sale and without any representation, warranty or assumption of liability of any kind as to the condition by Catawiki or by the seller. The condition of this item is the opinion of the seller and may differ from yours, your local garage, or the dealer’s opinion. This does not automatically mean the car does not conform to its description. Before bidding, please check your local legislation regarding vehicle registration. Neither the seller nor Catawiki is responsible for the registration of the vehicle in your country and will not accept a cancellation for your failure to register the vehicle. We also recommend that, if possible, you arrange a viewing with the seller before placing a bid.
